Marigold Nursery, based in Heswall, was lucky enough to receive a grant of £450 recently through the Love Wirral project. Love Wirral is a community project set up by Wirral Council with the aim of encouraging people to take greater responsibility and pride in their community.

Laird, a nationwide firm of Expert Witnesses based in Heswall, applied for the grant back in January 2014 with a very clear vision for their ‘Greenhouse Project’. Many companies across Wirral submitted different project ideas and the local community were encouraged to vote for their favourite project. Marigold Nursery has a number of links to Laird so the company worked hard to promote their project idea and ensure that the nursery were the winners!  John Eccleson, the Caretaker, used the money to build the Greenhouse himself and the rest of the money to buy all of the equipment and seeds needed to start growing all the fruit and veg!

Today, Holly Lonsdale, Account Manager at Laird, popped down to see the ‘fruits’ of their labour at Marigold Nursery. She told us “The greenhouse looks fabulous, and since this has been built they have now extended a garden in the back, where John, the caretaker has been building a play area for the children. They are growing everything from grapes, strawberry’s and potato’s to pumpkins! The children are currently taking part in a competition for each room to see who can grow the biggest pumpkin.”

Vicki Dickinson, Nursery Manager at Marigold Nursery, “the Greenhouse has made a fantastic edition to the nursery, not only for healthy eating but also because the children get excited to get involved in helping plant the seeds and help them grow.” With healthy eating being so important a topic at the moment, it’s great to see local businesses coming together to improve the lives of the next generation.
