Why Independence Matters in Vehicle Damage Assessments

Why Independence Matters in Vehicle Damage Assessments

Every vehicle damage assessment sits at the intersection of competing interests.

Bodyshops deserve to be paid fairly for the work they carry out. Insurers need confidence that they are only funding repairs which are technically justified and reasonably priced. Policyholders simply want their vehicle repaired safely, correctly and without unnecessary delays.

An independent assessor exists to bring balance to that process.

At Laird, our role is not to reduce repair costs, inflate repair costs, or favour one party over another. Our responsibility is to produce an objective, evidence based assessment that reflects the fair and reasonable cost of returning a vehicle to its pre-accident condition.

A Report With No Commercial Agenda

One of the most important aspects of an independent engineering report is that it has no commercial agenda.

Whether a repair costs £1,500 or £150,000 makes no difference to us. We are not rewarded for reducing repair costs, nor do we benefit from increasing them. Our only objective is to establish what repairs are genuinely required, which components should be repaired or replaced, and what constitutes a fair and reasonable repair methodology.

That independence is what gives insurers, repairers, solicitors, accident management companies and policyholders confidence in our conclusions.

Fair to Both Repairers and Insurers

There can sometimes be a misconception that vehicle assessors exist simply to reduce repair costs.

In reality, our responsibility is to ensure legitimate repair operations & methods are properly recognised and costed, while also identifying where repairs may not be technically justified or where alternative repair methods are appropriate.

A good assessment protects both sides. Bodyshops receive fair payment for necessary work, while insurers can be confident they are funding repairs supported by engineering evidence and recognised estimating practices.

Ultimately, everyone benefits from decisions that are technically correct rather than commercially motivated.

Engineering Decisions Made by Engineers

Although desktop assessments rely heavily on photographs and digital information, they are still engineering reports.

Every repair methodology, repair versus replace decision, estimate review and engineering opinion is made by qualified, experienced vehicle damage assessors.

These decisions are based on professional judgement, recognised estimating systems such as Audatex, Glass's Repair Estimate or GT Motive, manufacturer & Thatcham guidance where appropriate, and years of practical engineering experience.

Technology is an incredibly powerful tool, but engineering expertise remains at the centre of every report we produce.

Using AI to Support Engineer's Admin, Not Replace Them

Like many industries, vehicle damage assessment is evolving.

At Laird, we use artificial intelligence to assist with administrative and repetitive tasks that would otherwise consume valuable time & traditionally would be handled by administrators, data-entry staff. AI can help organise information, identify relevant documentation, assist with report preparation and streamline workflows.

What AI does not do is make engineering decisions.

Whether a repair is appropriate, whether damage is consistent with the incident, whether further investigation is required, or whether a repair methodology is technically sound are decisions made by our human assessors.

By allowing technology to handle routine administration, our engineers can spend more time focusing on what matters most: applying their technical knowledge to each individual claim. It is a human-led approach, supported by intelligent technology.

Transparency Builds Trust

Independent reporting is about clearly explaining how that conclusion has been reached.

Our reports are designed to be transparent, evidence based and easy to understand. Every recommendation should be capable of being justified, whether it relates to labour operations, replacement parts, repair methodology or overall repair costs.

Clear reasoning reduces disputes, improves communication between all parties and helps claims progress more efficiently.

Independence Benefits the Entire Claims Process

An independent desktop assessment should never favour one side over another. Its purpose is to provide a balanced, technically sound opinion that everyone involved can trust.

By combining experienced engineering judgement with modern technology, Laird delivers desktop vehicle damage reports that are objective, transparent and evidence based, helping insurers, repairers, accident management companies, solicitors and policyholders reach fair outcomes with confidence.

Because the best assessment is not the cheapest one, or the most expensive one; it's the right one.
