Investing in the Future: Supporting EV & Hybrid Skills at Laird

As vehicle technology continues to evolve, so too must the skills of the people who work on them.  At Laird, we believe that staying ahead of the curve means investing directly in our team, supporting their continued professional development, and ensuring we are fully prepared for the next generation of vehicles on the road.

That’s why Steve and Benn have recently been enrolled on a Level 2 IMI EV/HEV qualification, a specialist course designed to equip technicians with the knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and competently on electric and hybrid vehicles.

What the course covers

Electric and hybrid vehicles introduce new systems, new risks, and new safety requirements. This qualification focuses on building a clear understanding of those challenges, with particular emphasis on high-voltage systems and safe working practices.

Key areas of learning include:

  • Identifying different electric drive system configurations and understanding manufacturer-specific information

  • Recognising high-voltage components, cabling, and routing within EV and HEV vehicles

  • Understanding the hazards associated with high-voltage systems before, during, and after work is carried out

  • Correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including insulated gloves, footwear, eye protection, and appropriate clothing

  • Following correct procedures to disable and make safe high-voltage systems, allowing technicians to work safely and confidently

The course also places strong emphasis on health and safety, vehicle protection equipment, and the use of accurate manufacturer repair data, all essential when working with modern electric vehicles.

Practical skills and formal assessment

In addition to the technical theory, the course includes a practical assessment using college equipment, where delegates carry out a full power-down procedure and confirm the vehicle is safe to work on. An online IMI test forms part of the qualification, ensuring that both knowledge and practical competence are formally assessed.

This is an intensive course, which results in a recognised Level 2 IMI qualification, reinforcing industry-standard competence.

Supporting our people, strengthening our business

Sending Steve and Benn on this course is about more than just compliance or qualifications.  It reflects Laird’s ongoing commitment to:

  • Supporting our staff in developing new, future-proof skills

  • Investing in professional growth and long-term careers

  • Ensuring our workshop remains safe, capable, and ready for emerging vehicle technologies

As electric and hybrid vehicles become increasingly common, continued training is essential. By developing our team today, we are strengthening our capability for tomorrow, while giving our technicians the confidence, skills, and recognition they deserve.

We’re proud to support Steve and Benn on their professional development journey, and we look forward to continuing to invest in our people as the industry evolves.
